Breast Oncology
The breast cancer teams collaborate to provide advanced treatment options and advanced technology needed for accurate screening and diagnosis of breast disease. An experienced team of radiologists and surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, together with physician assistants, oncology-trained nurses, therapists and social workers, are dedicated to delivering personalized, high-quality care to breast cancer patients.

Our Tumor Board, part of the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer accreditation, provides regular multidisciplinary reviews of all cancer cases to determine the best treatment plan and ensure coordinated care. The board includes surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, as well as specialists from radiology, pathology, clinical nutrition, oncology support, oncology nursing, patient navigation, quality and safety. Certified cancer registrars document all patient histories, diagnoses, treatments and status of care. Our integrated breast practice allows multispecialty cancer treatment by a team of experts to provide multidisciplinary, personalized care. The center is widely recognized for its personalized and integrative approach to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Breast Surgery
The Department of Surgery, Westchester Medical Center, is the primary referral facility for regional hospitals and a lifeline for more than 2.4 million people in the Hudson Valley. The surgical team specializes in breast procedures including sentinel lymph node biopsy, partial mastectomy, total mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, radical mastectomy, skin sparing mastectomy, and nipple sparing mastectomy. Plastic and reconstructive surgery is offered for cancer and prophylactic surgeries to include oncoplastic surgery, tissue expander and implant placement, TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous) flap technique, LATIS (Latissimus Dorsi) flap technique, and DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforators) flap technique.

Oncology Patient Navigation
Patient navigators at  Redl Center for Cancer are intimately involved in each patient’s care. The presence of a full-time certified breast care nurse, the first in the region to be credentialed as a certified breast patient navigator in imaging and cancer, sets the Breast Center at MidHudson Regional Hospital apart from other centers in the mid-Hudson Valley.

From the moment a woman calls the center, our certified nurse becomes intimately involved in her care. The certified nurse works closely with breast center staff, physician offices, radiology centers and pathology departments to obtain patient records, schedule patients for additional diagnostic tests, and surgical consultation. The patient care navigator assists women during surgical consult, exam, and diagnostic procedures, remaining with the patient throughout the process explaining why each step is necessary and what to expect at each step. She refers patients for complementary and supportive services, is available for patient and family education, and ensures timely follow-up and surveillance.

MidHudson Regional Hospital offers 3D mammography via the revolutionary Selenia Dimensions system. This advanced technology, which has set the standard in mammography screening, provides:

  • Exceptionally sharp images
  • Seamless transition between imaging modes
  • Sophisticated user tools that simplify operation
  • Advanced clinical applications
  • The world’s first and only tomosynthesis-guided biopsy
  • Ergonomic design for patient comfort and ease of operation

3D mammography is a technique in which an x-ray arm images the breast from many different angles, layer by layer. This enables a radiologist to view the breast in significantly greater detail than traditional 2D mammography. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 3D mammography, when used along with standard digital mammograms, increased breast cancer detection rates by more than 40 percent.
