Sharief Dean-Holmes and Lia Hawkins, both 2016 graduates of Poughkeepsie High School and future enrollees at Dutchess Community College, have been awarded Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Scholarships.
The awards, each worth $1,000, were officially presented in a ceremony at MidHudson Regional Hospital on Friday, July 15 attended by hospital leadership, Dutchess Community College President Dr. Pamela Edington, and City of Poughkeepsie School District Superintendent Dr. Nicole Williams.
"WMCHealth is proud to support students in the communities we serve," said Mecca Santana, Vice President of Diversity and Community Relations for the WMCHealth Network. "We hope that these scholarships will help deserving students further their education and allow them to one day make a great impact on the Hudson Valley and beyond."
"It was a pleasure to host Sharief, Lia, and their families at MidHudson Regional Hospital for this momentous occasion," said Paul Hochenberg, Executive Director of MidHudson Regional Hospital. "Both students said they might want to one day enter the medical field, and we couldn't be happier to support them on their journey."
In 2016, the WMCHealth Network established the STEM Scholarship program to reward the academic achievements of outstanding high school seniors, while also supporting their continued education at a two or four year higher education institution. In total, WMCHealth has awarded $20,000 to students throughout the Hudson Valley region.
