Fall Prevention Clinic - Wednesday, October 7

MidHudson Regional Hospital Presenting Fall Prevention Clinic On October 7

9/14/2015

MidHudson Regional Hospital is proud to join local, state and national trauma healthcare partners in addressing the growing issue of fall-related injury and death among the elderly.  The hospital's Division of Trauma Services will hold a comprehensive fall prevention clinic for older adults, along with their caregivers and family members, on Wednesday, October 7 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  The event will focus on anticipatory screening and education.

Held in the Sister Ann Elizabeth Conference Center (first floor, The Atrium), this daylong educational opportunity will offer all attendees the chance to receive their personalized fall risk profile and include medical, vision and balance/mobility screenings, along with a medication review, and information on home safety, exercise, nutrition and assistive devices.

This event is free, but reservations are required. Please call 845.431.8159 to make an appointment. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided.

According to the National Council on Aging, trends in the Hudson Valley relating to falls and fall-related injuries among older adults mirror national trends.  One out of three older adults (those aged 65 or older) experience a fall, and among seniors, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries.  Via statistics compiled by the CDC, in 2013, 2.5 million nonfatal falls among older adults were treated in emergency departments; more than 734,000 of these patients were hospitalized.

To combat the risk of a fall, experts recommend participating in regular physical activity emphasizing balance and flexibility, getting regular eye and ear checkups, periodically reviewing all medications, and ensuring the home environment is safe and supportive.
