Conditions Treated

  • Stroke Strokes have many causes and usually involve an interruption or alteration of the blood supply to some area of the brain resulting in a lack of oxygen and subsequent tissue damage. Our stroke center specializes in rapid treatment to minimize the damage.

  • MidHudson Regional Hospital has received a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center (TSC) Certification. This certification is offered in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. As a TSC facility, we have met rigorous standards for performing endovascular thrombectomy and providing post-procedural care.
  • Neuro-trauma Direct trauma to the brain requires careful and dedicated care often over a lengthy course of rehabilitation. Here at MidHudson Regional Hospital, we have a dedicated team of rehab specialists.
  • Parkinson's Disease A degenerative disease of the movement control area of the brain which can be effectively managed through education and consultation with our neurologists.  The full spectrum of services is available at our center, from rehabilitation services to cutting age medical management, surgical care, and access to research in new therapies.
  • Gait and balance disorder
Problems keeping a steady balance and proper walking ability is a tell-tale sign of a neurologic problem.
  • Other movement disorders such as Essential Tremor, tic disorders, chorea and dystonia are treated in a comprehensive manner with the full gamut of treatment options, including botulinum toxin injections (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport and Myobloc), intrathecal medication pumps, and functional neurosurgical approaches (Deep Brain Stimulation – DBS).
  • Memory disorders
Disruption in memory function due to aging can be effectively treated by knowledgeable neurologists.
  • Spasticity
Overactive muscles due to an injury to the nervous system from trauma, stroke, and many other conditions. Muscle spasms can contribute greatly to disability and pain, and can be effectively treated by neurologists and physiatrists at MidHudson Regional Hospital, where a spasticity clinic integrates care across specialties.
  • Epilepsy A chronic disorder characterized by brain dysfunction and usually associated with some alteration of consciousness such as seizures. Epilepsy symptoms vary from complex abnormalities of behavior including generalized or focal convulsions to momentary spells of impaired consciousness.
  • Multiple Sclerosis A disorder involving degeneration of the insulating tissue surrounding nerves. which presents with a wide range of symptoms and severity.
  • Sleep Disorders We address altered sleep patterns that may be impaired by changes in our biology, medications, stress or other unidentified reasons. These disorders can have serious consequences to a person's health as effective sleep is necessary for continued survival.
  • Neuro-muscular, peripheral nerve injury Injury to neuromuscular junctions can disrupt nerve impulses to the muscles and cause symptoms ranging from paralysis to uncontrollable pain.
  • Pain Pain management involves complex chemical pathways in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Our neurologists can develop pain medication regimens to effectively control chronic pain.

A Designated Primary Stroke Center

Welcome to MidHudson Regional Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) and a Thrombectomy-Capable Primary Stroke Center.

What Is a Stroke?

Stroke is a medical emergency that can lead to long-term neurological damage, disability, or even death. It is a common cause of adult disability in the United States and ranks second globally as the leading cause of death. The risk factors associated with stroke include age, hypertension, previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), diabetes, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, and atrial fibrillation. Of these, high blood pressure is considered the most significant modifiable risk factor for stroke.

There are primarily two types of stroke, ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke is caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain due to arterial embolism or blockages. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain. Both types of stroke can result in the loss of brain function, which may cause difficulties in speech (both speaking and understanding); vision; or moving limbs on one or or both sides of the body. Some of the complications of stroke may include pneumonia, brain swelling, seizures, and blood clots. It is essential to recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke promptly and seek immediate medical attention to improve the chances of a positive outcome.

Rapid Assessment. Rapid Action.

From the moment EMS notifies our hospital of an incoming stroke patient, our stroke response activates. A 24/7 team of triage nurses, radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and pharmacists prepare for the patient's arrival. Once a patient enters our doors, our multidisciplinary team begins performing a rapid assessment and evaluation of the patient's condition, administering appropriate treatments, and coordinating with other medical professionals as needed to provide the best possible care for the patient. The full team may include:

  • EMTs
  • Triage Nurses
  • Radiologists (and CT scan)
  • Pharmacists
  • Neurologists
  • Neurosurgeons
  • Residents, Stroke Attending, Emergency Department physicians, nurses and more
